Each month, the principals of Live Oak and Sobrato High Schools choose a total of four students (two from each school) to spotlight. Live Oak senior Mark Holmstrom, 18 is this week’s Student of the Week.
What inspires you: Service to others inspires me. I have always worked hard to give back to the community. Dr. Brian Conrey has been my mentor and has shown me the value of helping others.
What is your favorite subject in school, and why: My favorite subject is definitely Math. I have always enjoyed it and I seem to do well at it.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be: I would fix the world economy. So many problems in the world like poverty and unemployment are reflections of the economy.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? I would like to go back to Costa Rica with my family and grandpa. I loved riding ATVs on the beach there and I would get to practice my Spanish.
Name one big challenge in your life right now: Balancing everything I do. I have to make time for school, family, getting ready for college, lacrosse, senior year activities, friends and looking for an internship this summer.
What is your dream job? Since I was young, I have wanted to be a math professor. As a professor, I would get to teach and help people as well as do research.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things could you not live without? Being an Eagle Scout, I would have to bring my pocket knife. A pallet of duct tape and a satellite phone would also be nice.
Favorite book: I can’t decide on just one. I really like the “Harry Potter” series and the “Pendragon” series.
What are your plans post high school? I will be going to Stanford in the Fall. I’m planning on majoring in math.
Something that makes you smile: My cat Izzy and my girlfriend Rachel (not necessarily in that order).
