On Friday, February 5, the halls filled with excitement at Stratford School of Morgan Hill in preparation for the Jump Rope for Heart event. Although the forecast called for rain, it did not slow down Rosemary Miller, as she busily prepared for the one-hour jump rope activity. Rosemary Miller is Stratford’s P.E. teacher, and affectionately known by her students as Mrs. Miller. She is often seen cheering students on and challenging them to meet their goals both physically and academically.

Mrs. Miller has been involved in the Jump Rope for Heart program for more than 10 years. She was inspired to get involved by her father who suffered a stroke and sadly passed away in December of 2009. As a tribute to Miller’s father, and the many others who have battled stroke and heart disease, the Stratford community came together to celebrate our hearts and health.

All were involved in this inspiring event … from students and teachers, to parents and even Miller’s family members. Miller’s husband, Kevin Miller, an educator at Ann Sobrato High School, took time out of his day to lend his skills as our DJ.

At 1 p.m. the doors burst open as eager students rushed to the black top. Music filled the air while students showed off their jump roping tricks that Miller taught them. Onlookers saw tricks that included double Dutch, helicopter, snake, doubles and quads. Parents passed out waters and oranges, and assisted children in listening to their heart beat with a stethoscope. Several parents joined in the fun by jumping alongside their children.

As the event came to an end, students returned to their classrooms tired, but happy with all they had accomplished. The 55 elementary students raised more than $2,700 for heart and stroke research.
