Local residents load up sand bags as they prepared for the heavy rains that pounded Morgan Hill and the surrounding areas over the weekend.

The City of Morgan Hill and other authorities notified residents that a flash flood warning is in effect in Santa Clara County until late in the evening Jan. 10.

<

“However,  at this time, the City of Morgan Hill is not anticipating the same level of impacts that occurred on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 8),” reads an advisory email from Morgan Hill Communications Manager Maureen Tobin. “The National Weather Service’s forecast for Morgan Hill today, Tuesday, 1/10/17, is continued light rain this morning, with  2 to 4 (inches) of rain between the hours of 2 p.m. through 10 p.m.”

<

The city’s public safety and maintenance staff will continue to “work diligently” to minimize storm related impacts such as flooding and traffic hazards, the email continues.

<

Much heavier rains the afternoon of Jan. 8 resulted in a brief overflow of Little Llagas Creek, which runs along the west side of Morgan Hill, which in turn brought flooding to the downtown and other neighborhoods. No major damages or injuries were reported.

<

City staff also wanted to remind motorists to use caution while driving in the rain and stay clear of any high standing water until the current storm passes. Residents and families are also encouraged to have a household plan in the event of a sudden flood.

<

Sandbags are still available at three locations in Morgan Hill: 100 Edes Court, next to the city’s corporation yard; Old Monterey Road, next to the El Toro Fire Station; and the southeast corner of the Depot Street Caltrain parking lot.

<

As of about 11 a.m., large stacks of full sandbags were piled up at the Old Monterey Road location. If no full sandbags are available, residents can use shovels on site to fill their own.
