History buffs will be treated to an illustrated talk Wednesday, June 18, when Professor Noble Stockton offers “The Real Commodore Stockton,” a humorous interpretation of the life of Commodore Robert Field Stockton.

Commodore Stockton and the adventurer John C. Frémont, seized California from Mexico in 1846. As colorful as Frémont, although not as well known, the Commodore was a duelist, railroad and canal monopolist, a founder of Liberia, pioneer in naval engineering, secret emissary of President Polk to provoke war with Mexico along the Texas border, senator and presidential candidate, and star witness at Frémont’s court martial trial.

Noble Stockton is a retired professor of philosophy and history at University of Wisconsin-River Falls and serves on the editorial board of Noticias del Puerto de Monterey, a historical quarterly published by the Monterey History and Art Association.

The lecture, beginning at 7 p.m., is sponsored by The Monterey History and Art Association Focus on History Series at the Mayo O’Donnell Library, located at 155 Van Buren in Monterey.

The MHAA, which operates the Mayo O’Donnell Library, Casa Serrano, Perry Downer Historic Costume Gallery and the Maritime Museum, is the oldest cultural institution on the Monterey Peninsula. It began its work in 1931, and is still going strong today as a leader in the historic preservation of Monterey’s artifacts, historic properties, and the precious art created by many of our most famous residents.

Details: Shawna Hershfield, executive director of the Monterey History and Art Association, 372-2608, ext. 11.
