a proposal for a state football championship to its Federated
Council at its meeting Oct. 29 in San Diego.
Oakland – After nearly two years of discussion, the State CIF forwarded a proposal for a state football championship to its Federated Council at its meeting Oct. 29 in San Diego.
The two-year pilot proposal for the “CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games” calls for three games to be played at a single site in the south and featuring the top teams from Northern California against the top teams from Southern California in each of three divisions: small, medium and large schools.
“Even though only six schools will participate in the championships, all 1,362 schools will benefit because the intent is to use the revenue to provide low or no-cost educational programs to our schools,” said CIF Executive Director Marie Ishida.
The proposal calls for the revenue generated from the championship to be used to offset costs for the CIF’s nearly two dozen educational programs. Currently schools and districts must pay for these programs, with much of the money coming from ASB or gate receipt accounts. The CIF leadership feels these courses are vital for coaches and administrators in order for them to be able to teach the value of educational athletics to our students.
The State CIF is conducting a poll on its Web site (www.cifstate.org) in order to get the broadest perspective possible from all stakeholders on the issue. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the three-question survey.
“I believe this football proposal is a win-win for all our schools,” added Ishida. “Is it perfect? No. But we certainly hope to build on what we learn during the two-year pilot period.”
