April showers will certainly mean May flowers for gardeners stopping by the historic Morgan Hill House at Villa Mira Monte on Saturday, April 24. The spring garden show and sale will be a mix of plants, advice and garden goodies.

The Morgan Hill Historical Society will hold its first-ever plant and planter sale at 17860 Monterey Road, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tomatoes, heirloom and otherwise, historic and rare irises, special planters, flowers, veggies and greenery, local honey and more will be on display and on sale.

Vendors will array themselves and a variety of garden-related items, including furniture, around the grounds of the hospitable 1886 Victorian house, which has the most unusual gift shop in town.

Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County will hold a Plant Clinic – a veritable Plant Road Show – starting at 9:30 a.m. to answer questions about sick and unknown plants (try to bring sick plants early and in plastic to isolate them from health plants).

Nancy and William Harris will show off their plot on the villa grounds devoted to hundreds of irises, with many varieties rare and in bloom; all are named on tags for strollers to identify. The couple will be taking orders for bulbs, to be delivered when the time is right.

Nancy Garrison, Master Gardener program director will give a talk at 9:30 a.m., titled “Vegetable Gardening with an Emphasis on Tomatoes,” Bob Stannard will talk on roses and Donna Ahern of Belle Vie herb nursery with share herb lore at her booth. Others will discourse on the joys of composting, herb and vegetable gardening.

Part of the proceeds will go to the Historical Society. Vendors are encouraged to call in advance to reserve a spot.

The History Throw, a blanket woven with historic Morgan Hill and San Martin buildings, will also be on sale, for $60 as a Society fundraiser. Sponsored by the Historical Society and the Master Gardeners of SCC.
