Some sloppy defense, lackluster offense and a less-than-healthy starting line-up caught up with the Gavilan baseball team over the weekend. On Friday, the Rams dropped a 4-1 decision to Monterey Peninsula College. On Saturday, they lost to Skyline College, 7-3.

“We had opportunities in all of the games, but were just not getting the breaks,” said head coach Neal Andrade. “It was a long week and a couple days off to get healthy will help.”

The Rams, who played five games in five days last week, take on Ohlone at home today at 2pm.

Against Monterey Peninsula, Gavilan out-hit the Lobos 7-5. But out of three bases-loaded scoring opportunities, the Rams drove in just one run.

“We had plenty of opportunities,” Andrade said. “We just could not cash in.”

Taking the loss on the mound was Gimenez. Manny Gonzalez had two hits and an RBI.

LO hockey

Despite several key late-season injuries, the Live Oak High ice hockey team came within a game of winning a championship this year.

In Friday night’s championship final, the Acorns dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision to rival Milpitas at Rollin Ice in San Jose. LO had beaten Milpitas twice during the regular season.

Although Live Oak seemed able to keep the puck in scoring territory for much of the game and had many scoring chances, Milpitas was able to take advantage of several breakaways. Junior Ricky Lasher stepped up for the team, filling in for senior goalie Michael Anvari. He made several key saves but was caught unprotected on some of the quick breakaways from Milpitas’s top scorer.

LO was hampered by injury. Sophomore Scott Alexander, still nursing a knee injury, returned for the game but sophomore Conner Williamson is still out with a wrist break. Seniors Matt Edgar and Sean Gullery, along with junior Chase Norman, and sophomores Kyle Dutra, Brian Costello, and Alexander did give Milpitas a good game and will have to wait until next season for another shot.

Live Oak beat St. Lawrence in an exciting semifinal game the previous week to advance to the finals.
