The Spirit of Morgan Hill has been preparing for the upcoming competitive season with the inaugural season of recreational interleague play with the Pajaro Valley 14-and-under Senior Division.
Spirit hosted the Pajaro Valley teams on April 14th at San Martin Gwinn School, with the four Spirit Senior teams going 2-1-1. The Spirit Lightning beat Pajaro Valley’s Full Throttle 7-4, while Spirit Storm defeated the PV Heartbreakers 10-9.
Saturday, Spirit’s Senior division teams traveled to Watsonville to face the Pajaro Valley teams again and recorded another two wins over Pajaro Valley, finishing 2-2 for the day. The Spirit Thunder led off with a 6-3 win over the PV Full Throttle. The highlight of the game was Kylie Weeks’ barehanded catch of a soft line drive to end the game with two runners on. In the second game, the Spirit Lightning dominated in an 8-1 win over the PV Heartbreakers.
The local team was led by Maria Sandoval’s 1O strikeouts in four innings and her 3-for-4 effort with two doubles and two RBIs. Sarah Machado pitched two more innings in the six-inning affair, adding three strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Other hitting highlights included Justine Tynan’s 2-for-3  effort with a double, Miranda Rehnborg’s three runs scored and 1.000 on-base percentage in four at-bats. The Spirit Lightning played flawless defense with superb catching by Liz Krall and Jennifer Rosales, with one stolen base allowed in the game and 2 passed balls.
The Spirit of Morgan Hill continues its season through the Championship Saturday on May 12. The league will field several competitive ASA B/C Junior Olympic teams in the 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U divisions after the end of the regular season. Spirit will hold evaluations on May 1 and May 2 for 12U and 14U divisions and May 6 for 8U and 10U, and host a 24-team ASA tournament at Community Park on June 1-3 in the 10U and 12U ASA B/C divisions.
