A group of Morgan Hill cyclists, led by Specialized Bicycle Components president Mike Sinyard and staff, took off this morning on a 660-mile trek to Las Vegas to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer.
The Morgan Hill-based company has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a network of breast cancer survivors and activists, since 2007. The challenging ride, in which the cyclists will travel between 100 and 150 miles per day, is an effort to promote this partnership and raise awareness of the cancer foundation’s efforts to fight cancer.
Joining Sinyard on the grueling ride over Mt. Hamilton and Tioga Pass, and through Death Valley, are Phil Keoghan, host of “The Amazing Race,” and Specialized employees and dealers.
The cyclists plan to arrive in Las Vegas Sept. 22 for the Interbike show.
Specialized has donated more than $450,000 to aid in the fight against breast cancer, and will continue this commitment through 2010 with sales of Susan G. Komen products. The company hopes to contribute another $400,000 to the foundation next year.
“We are lucky to be able to use the bike – a great vehicle for change – to improve the world we all live in,” Sinyard said. “Susan G. Komen for the Cure is one of our key partners in our advocacy efforts, along with the International Mountain Biking Association, Bikes Belong, and the Northern California High School Mountain Bike League. Through these and other related efforts around the world, Specialized aims to give back to the cycling community in meaningful ways that have a lasting impact, both to cycling and to the planet overall.”
Over the last 12 months, Specialized has donated more than $1 million to cycling-related causes and charities. The bicycle maker has pledged more than $1.4 million in the coming years for similar causes including access and sustainability of trails, increasing construction of cycling pathways and shared-use roads, putting more kids on bikes, and general health and wellness through the promotion of cycling.
