Sample ballots and voter information will soon arrive in the mailboxes of residents living in State Senate District 15 – a conglomerate of four counties stretching from Santa Barbara to Morgan Hill to Watsonville – for the Aug. 17 special election.

More than 114,000 voters are eligible to cast their ballot for either Republican Sam Blakeslee or Democrat John Laird to replace Abel Maldonado after he was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to Lt. Governor.

The deadline to register to vote in the special electiojn is Aug. 2 and all mailed registration forms must be postmarked by the same day. A white 24-hour drop-box is located by the flag pole outside the Santa Clara County Registrar of Office at 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2, San Jose.

Laird’s win would push the Senate Democrats within one vote of a two-thirds majority required to pass laws without Republican consent. He is a former Santa Cruz assemblyman and educator.

Blakeslee is an assemblyman from San Luis Obispo and won the most votes in the June 8 runoff to determine two candidates from a pool of four.

Schwarznegger has been criticized for not consolidating the 15th District election with the Nov. 2 general election, which will cost an estimated $2.5 million and is the only item on the Aug. 17 ballot.

Pick up a voter registration form at post offices, public libraries, fire stations, city hall and most local government offices or online at www.sccvote.org.
