Live Oak sophomore Rachel Cretcher qualified for CCS in two

MORGAN HILL — Live Oak swimming coach Lynn Gautschi was asked a tough question at the end of this season. How good can Rachel Cretcher get?

“If she pushes herself, she’s going to be flying next year,” Gautschi said. “She has to make it her goal to keep getting better. She has a lot of potential.”

Cretcher, the Acorns’ Sophomore of the Year, was still healing from a broken foot this spring while qualifying for the CIF-Central Coast Section Championships in the 500-meter freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. Cretcher also was a second-team all-league driver during water polo season.

Cretcher hopes to qualify for the CCS Finals meet in the 500 freestyle and 400 relay, plus the 200-yard freestyle, next spring.

Sobrato Sophomore of the Year Marissa Benjamin exploded onto the track and field stage this spring, winning Santa Teresa Division titles in the 100 and 200 meters. She made the cut for CCS Semifinals in the 200, plus the 4×100-meter relay.

Benjamin also was a starter on Sobrato’s soccer team.
