SOFTBALL: Gilroy secures spot in World Series semifinals with win over Guam

Sophomore bats 5 for 5 as SHS beats Del Mar 12-5
MORGAN HILL — For the Lady Bulldogs, Friday’s 12-5 victory over Del Mar was as big as confidence boosts get.

Because of spring break, Sobrato had to continue its Santa Teresa Division softball campaign last week with limited roster numbers. The Bulldogs paid dearly Wednesday, losing 6-0 at Santa Teresa, but managed to break even Friday at Sobrato High School behind an explosive afternoon by Heather Johnson and sound pitching from Katie Machado and Frankie Kellett

The Lady Bulldogs will start anew this week at 2-2 in league.

“It brought a good feeling having this record,” SHS manager Gene Ciraulo said Sunday. “The girls were pretty happy to bounce back like that.”

Johnson batted 5 for 5 and finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle. The sophomore doubled and tripled twice, drove in three runs and scored four times.

“She had a day,” Ciraulo said.

Machado, the starter, went two innings, giving up three runs in as many hits and two walks. Kellett struck out four and allowed four hits.

The Bulldogs had a field day at the plate. Nicole Larson reached base four times, scored twice and stole two bases; Taylor Di Sibio doubled and collected two RBIs, and freshman Kallie Klinger doubled.

Sobrato will travel to Oak Grove on Wednesday and host Lincoln on Friday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
