An undefeated season to go with its Tri-County Athletic League title was almost assured even before the Live Oak High girls soccer team went through the motions in a league-season-ending 5-0 victory over visiting Gilroy on Wednesday.

The only suspense left, if there was any, was whether the Acorns could finish off a dominant string of defensive efforts by holding the Mustangs scoreless.

Sure enough, Live Oak (13-3-4 overall, 9-0-1 in league) capped its TCAL season with its ninth shutout in 10 league games, the only blemish being a goal scored by Hollister in the first half of the first league game of the season.

Acorn coach Tony Vasquez said the defensive accomplishment was the high point of the season for Live Oak.

“We tried not to let the other teams score on us,” he said. “And, even though Hollister scored a goal, just giving up that one goal, that was our goal.”

Vasquez said the team’s real goal, though, is to win a section title. To that end, he said the Acorns are likely to gain a fifth or sixth seed in the Central Coast Section playoffs, which start next week. The CCS seeding meeting will be held Saturday.
