Plans for a soccer complex to be located on part of the property donated to the school district by the family of Ann Sobrato are moving forward, though the 16 fields will probably not be ready for play until next year.
Charlotte Powers, spokeswoman for the San Jose Soccer Complex Foundation, told trustees on Monday the environmental impact report (EIR) process is under way. A focus of the EIR will be potential traffic problems with the proposed entrance/exit of the complex, which is on Monterey Road.
“When that is completed, construction may begin,” Powers said. “The complex is scheduled for completion in August 2005.”
The projected cost for the facility is $3.5 million. The land being used is in the greenbelt area, which means the complex can only use temporary structures for bathrooms or storage sheds.
Trustee Shellé Thomas told Powers she hoped the foundation would consider using modular-style bathrooms rather than portable toilets.
The bathrooms at Sobrato High would not be used during games at the complex, Powers said, except possibly during a championship game, when the foundation would use the Sobrato football field and pay the district a field-use fee.
“Your fields are going to be nicer than ours; we’re still trying to figure out what kind of grass we planted,” Trustee Mike Hickey said. “Would there be a possibility of us being able to use your soccer fields during the week for games?”
Powers said she thought it could be possible for an agreement between the district and the foundation on the use of the complex when the foundation had no games scheduled.
Thomas asked if I would also be possible for the foundation to purchase bleachers and lights for the Sobrato field.
“That won’t happen, the lighting,” Powers said.
Because the field is in the greenbelt, no lighting is permitted.
