Cardboard, duct tape, glue, caulking and waterproof paint: the ingredients for “pure fun” at Ann Sobrato High School.
The cardboard boat races May 23 at the Sobrato pool were held for the third year in a row for its end of the year senior farewell activities. It all began with history teacher Howard Barnes and science teacher Stephen Lentz as a spirit-building activity. This year, physics teacher Peng Yav joined in the fun and assigned constructing the boats as a class project, producing 23 cardboard boats in all.
Boats had to be made out of cardboard and students also used duct or packing tape, glue, caulking and waterproof paint.
Every boat must be inspected prior to the race to meet the requirements. Participants must ride in their boats and paddle at both lengths of the pool.
