Morgan Hill – The Sobrato High School swim team dropped its season opener to Gilroy High on Wednesday afternoon at the Sobrato aquatic center.

The Bulldog boys were defeated 98-67, and the girls lost 93-77.

The Bulldogs were led by freshman Danny Thompson, who won both the 100-yard butterfly and freestyle.

Boys team captain and senior Sky Sandberg won the 100-yard backstroke and came in second for the 200-yard individual medley.

The Bulldogs girls team was led by the relay teams, which won the 400-yard relay and the 200-yard medley.

Other notables were sophomore Ammon Suzuki, who won the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Taylor Wind-Cassen, who won the 200-yard individual medley.

Girls team captain Amelia Greenland finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Though the Bulldogs dropped their season openers, coach Mark Friedley was still feeling optimistic.

“It’s still early in the season,” said Friedley. “We need to work on a few things. Those are things that we usually improve during mid-season. This was our first meet of the season and if we can improve our starts and our turns this early in the season we could be more effective. I am also looking for more endurance out of these kids.”

The Bulldogs will get back in the water Thursday to take on Overfelt High in San Jose.

Friedley, who is coaching his first year at Sobrato, said that he is looking forward to a competitive season.

“I am really pleased with my kids’ effort,” said Friedley. “During the rest of the season, we want to qualify some of our swimmers for CCS (Central Coast Section championships) and maybe get our relay teams in there as well.”
