Ryan Evanger did it all Saturday for Sobrato in the first round of the Palma Tournament, hitting a seventh-inning grand slam and pitching a complete game as Sobrato upended North Salinas 6-3.
“There were two outs when he hit it,” Bulldog coach Ulises “Shorty” Gutierrez said. “And he pitched a great game as well.”
Evanger’s blast erased a 3-2 deficit and earned him the win. Evanger went the distance, pitching an eight-hitter.
Bryan Yates led a 10-hit Sobrato attack with three singles. Evanger and Kevin Sullivan each collected two hits. Nick Wade scored twice for the Bulldogs (8-6).
On Thursday, Sobrato had its four-game Blossom Valley Athletic League win streak snapped as it lost to Del Mar 10-7.
The Bulldogs (6-6 BVAL) forged a 7-2 lead in the top of the fourth only to have the Dons tie the game in the bottom of the inning and win it by scoring three times in the fifth.
Del Mar (5-8-1 overall, 4-7-1 BVAL) rode a 12-hit attack to the win. Everyone in the lineup reached base. Dallin Blank, Curtis Carter, Daniel Farias and Tyler Lopez all collected two hits. Blank, Carter and Brandon Castillo each scored two runs to help the Dons stop a three-game losing streak that included an 8-2 defeat two days earlier to the Bulldogs.
Sobrato continues BVAL action at 3:30pm April 18 when it hosts Independence.
