Morgan Hill – The Sobrato High School field hockey team blanked San Jose High Academy 5-0 Tuesday in the battle of the Blossom Valley Athletic League Bulldogs.
Working as a team, Sobrato jumped to an early 2-0 lead with the one-two passing combination of senior Megan Rotter and junior Jenn Tran.
Senior Haley Klingenberg scored the first goal at the 2:37 mark with a close shot on an assist from Rotter who relayed a pass from Tran.
About two minutes later, at the 4:30 mark, Rotter again turned a pass from Tran into an assist finding junior Hallie Kiernan deep in San Jose territory for Sobrato’s second goal.
Hustling up and down the field Sobrato and San Jose exchanged possession for much of the first half, but the home Bulldogs hounded their San Jose counterparts for another goal before the half.
Junior Remy Gross took a shot on goal, which was blocked, but junior teammate Alisa Devlin snatched the rebound and extended Sobrato’s lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 29:14 mark.
In the second half Sobrato put the choke chain on the San Jose Bulldogs as senior Casey Post barricaded the goal, and senior Briana Fisher connected with the back of the box twice.
Fisher scored her first goal, a solo shot, at the 8:53 mark, and her second, off a rebound, much later around the 25:00 mark.
Head coach Niki Donaldson was enthused to see her team bounce back from a 4-0 loss to Del Mar last Thursday, and extend their league record to 2-1.
“They have finally started showing things in games that we do in practice and it seems like things are starting to sink in,” Donaldson said. “They’re using small passes, they’re getting to the ball first and they’re talking and communicating more on the field.”
Sobrato 1, Mitty 2
San Jose High Academy does not have a junior varsity field hockey team, so Sobrato took a default win with San Jose’s forfeit, but to stay competitive Sobrato scheduled a practice game against Archbishop Mitty High School’s freshman field hockey team.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Sobrato’s JV girls went into the second period with some incentive not to lose to an all-freshman team.
Sophomore Vicky Perry tied the game at one with a goal at the 11:15 mark of the second half, giving the Bulldogs some momentum.
While Sobrato held possession of the ball on the Monarchs’ side of the field, and within striking distance of the goal for the majority of the game, Mitty maintained their intensity, and at the 20:10 mark scored another goal to reclaim the lead.
With less than five minutes left Sobrato protected the ball and had scoring opportunities on two short-corner attempts, but could not find the box, and dropped the game 2-1.
