Hollister – Gary Leung took medalist honors for the second time this season and the Sobrato golf team provided some quality competition despite falling to San Benito 220-229 on Thursday at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
Leung, a senior who is the team captain and No. 1 player, fired a two-over-par 38 to lead the Bulldogs. He also fired a two-over 38 earlier in the season at San Jose Municipal Golf Course.
In the Monterey Bay Invitational two weeks ago, he carded an 84, despite receiving eight penalties strokes and four-putting a hole.
“He was a little nervous there,” Sobrato coach Norm Brown said of Leung, who will attend University of California-Santa Barbara next year where Brown hopes he will attempt to walk onto the golf team. “Because we’ve never had a team, it was his first time in competition with these guys in Northern California.”
Matt Kellett was the next best finisher behind Leung, shooting 44.
“It was a great experience for us because (Ridgemark) is kind of a tight course to play,” Brown said. “We’re really appreciative of San Benito helping us out with some matches.”
Right now, Brown is concentrating on the players getting more experience and developing their skills.
“We’ve got some good young players coming up,” Brown said. “Ricky Hinman is playing more consistently and Ron Gifford hits the ball really long. If he’s more consistent with his short game, his game will mature.”
