The Sobrato baseball team started off the season with a win at home, edging Prospect 4-3 last Friday.

The Bulldogs, who are in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division, started the year against one of their league foes and are looking to make a name for themselves in the BVAL this year.

“It’s a pretty competitive league,” said coach Shorty Gutierrez. “The Santa Teresa Division gives us a chance to win a title led by our four seniors. Last year was tough but through the experience that we gained last year I think that gives us a chance to do well and compete this season.”

The Bulldogs were led by the dominant pitching of Billy Birrell, who pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run. In seven innings, Birrell struck out seven and rebounded from a tough fourth inning where Prospect scored three runs.

After Prospect tied the game in the fourth, Sobrato tightened up defensively and didn’t allow another run. The game remained tied until the Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Ryan Evanger supported Birrell’s strong performance with a solid day at the plate going 2 for 2 with two RBI. Tim Buich went 2 for 3 with one RBI, and Danny Nelson also had on RBI. Billy Hill went 2 for 3 on the day and was driven in after he successfully stole second.

“Our goal is to win our league,” Gutierrez said. “We need to take care of business in league. Going into the season our mindset is to beat each team two out of three games with each series.”

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday at Evergreen Valley.
