Sobrato’s girls water polo team is riding a wave of success.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-0 with a sweep of the Wahine Tournament at Live Oak over the weekend.
Sobrato defeated Fremont 7-6 to open the tournament, followed by a 14-2 win over Evergreen Valley and a 9-7 win over Willow Glen to clinch the championship.
The final game against Willow Glen was extra special for the Bulldogs, who lost to the Rams twice last season.
Sobrato set the tone in the Fremont game with goal tender Sesa Ferdun minding the cage and keeping the Bulldogs with a two-goal lead.
“She was the MVP of that game. She kept us in the game,” said coach Dave Burnett. “Without her, we’d have lost. You have to give her the kudos.”
After blowing out Evergreen Valley, the Bulldogs found themselves in another dogfight facing the Rams.
Burnett said the team all around stepped up and, with no one scoring more than twice in the 9-7 win.
He did single out senior Lana Burnett who had two goals and helped to shut down Willow Glen’s offensive leader.
Sobrato will next head to the Watsonville Tournament in its final non-league warm up.
Coach Burnett said his big focus is for the girls to work on their set offense rather than relying solely on fast-break goals.
“When you play better teams, you’re not going to get that,” Burnett said.
Sobrato opens the Watsonville Tournament 2 p.m. Friday.
It will open Blossom Valley Athletic League play Oct. 2 at home against Leland.
