For the record, the Sobrato High girls volleyball team is the possessor of two firsts in school history.
After competing in the school’s first athletic contest last week, the Lady Bulldogs earned Sobrato’s first official victory on Tuesday.
Sobrato rebounded from a first-set loss to edge visiting Santa Teresa 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 in junior varsity action at Live Oak High.
“We’re really excited about this,” Sobrato coach Marni Kutok said of her team winning in just its third match of the season. “This shows we got the team together quickly and we’re hoping to be competitive.”
Kutok praised the play of freshmen Wendy Detmers and Nicole Simoneau in Tuesday’s victory, which improved the Bulldogs to 1-2 overall this season.
Sobrato lost to St. Francis of Watsonville and Hollister in two matches earlier this season.
The Lady Bulldogs play at Santa Teresa on Tuesday.
LO cross-country
Getting an early look at the league competition at the Tri-County Athletic League Jamboree on Wednesday, the Live Oak High boys cross-country team finished third overall behind Hollister-San Benito and Palma at Toro Park.
Acorn senior Billy Wong led the way with a seventh-place finish for the boys.
Meanwhile, the short-handed Acorn girls team was led by Cobbie Jones, who won the event, and Lisa Herrera, who took third.
Live Oak opens the league season at Hollister on Monday.
LO coaches discuss re-leaguing
All but one Live Oak coach voted in favor of attempting to move to the Blossom Valley Athletic League at a coaches’ meeting on Tuesday, according to Athletic Director Mark Cummins.
BVAL officials had asked Live Oak officials about moving into the league when it appeared three Campbell schools would be moving out, Cummins said. But the Campbell schools stayed put, and the BVAL is currently full, he said.
