The Sobrato football team defeated James Lick High School 48-14 on Friday en route to their best season in school history.
The Bulldogs final overall record is 6-3-1, but all of their losses came to tough opponents in the preseason.
The win solidifies Sobrato’s position as West Valley Division champions, and sets the stage for their first ever playoff game against the Live Oak Acorns at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
After a scoreless first quarter,j junior running back Tony Zizzo put six on the board for the Bulldogs with a five-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Zizzo capped the scoring drive by scoring the two-point conversion.
Zizzo ran for 117 yards in 17 carries and two touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Steven Sorce scored the second TD for the Bulldogs on a three-yard run. Senior full back Steven Guiterrez completed the drive with the two-point conversion.
Guiterrez continued the second-quarter onslaught with a four-yard TD run. Sophomore Adam Guerra completed the play with the two-point conversion.
Guerra added a 32-yard field goal late in the second quarter to give Sobrato a 27-0 lead at the half.
Guerra was three for three in extra point attempts.
Guiterrez finished the night with 32 yards in seven carries.
Sophomore Mark Borland ran for 30 yards on seven carries and one TD.
The Bulldogs mostly stayed on the ground, but starting junior quarterback Steven Sorce completed three of four passes for 36 yards and one touchdown.
The Bulldogs held James Lick scoreless through three quarters, but gave up a pair of touchdowns in the fourth.
Sorce was replaced late in the fourth quarter by Erick Levell, who started for the Bulldogs for the majority of the season.
Levell shook off some rust and completed two of four passes for 32 yards.
“We got it done,” head coach Dan Brown said. “They tried to come out and play us tough and we took it to ’em.”
Senior tight end Shane Kendall caught an 18-yard pass from Sorce in the fourth quarter for another Sobrato touchdown.
The Bulldogs are only three days away from their first playoff appearance in school history, and they can’t wait.
“I’m anticipating a big crowd,” Brown said. “It’ll be standing room only and I don’t have problem with that.
“I think it was meant to be, and I’m glad because it’s great for both programs and the community.”
Brown said he has watched Live oak play, and thinks there are some striking similarities in the two teams.
“Our speed is similar, our size is similar … they’ve went more to the veer option game with their new QB … and it’s made a difference,” he said.
Brown said he’s going to wait to make a decision on who his starting quarterback will be.
“We’ll make a decision later in the week,” he said. “Levell got his rustiness out last game so we’ll have to see how practice goes.”
