Sobrato’s boys water polo team may have gone 1-3 this weekend at the Connolly Tournament, but it saw great strides in each game it played.
The Bulldogs fell 20-3 against Soquel last Friday, but started improving the very next game.
Coach David Letts said Soquel was strong and experienced and opened his boys eyes to the kind of teams they will see this year.
“It was good to see what kind of competition was out there,” Letts said.
From there, Sobrato dropped a 13-6 decision to Lynbrook. Letts said Lynbrook offered a different style of play and will now allow the Bulldogs to prepare for new defenses.
“They ran some defenses we have been able to practice offensively,” Letts said.
After the two convincing losses, Sobrato came back on Saturday and went to war with Mitty.
The Bulldogs and Mitty went back and forth, but the Monarchs came out on top 6-5.
“We played really good, we just came out on the short end of the stick,” Letts said. “The team was really frustrated.”
The frustration carried over in Sobrato’s final game of the tournament in a positive way.
The Bulldogs took home their first win of the season, downing Cupertino 14-3.
Sobrato scored six goals in the first quarter alone.
For the tournament, Letts said Luke Northcott played well in the cage. He saw several odd-man rushes, counterattacks and some all around strong offenses. Letts said his keeper hung in there and played well on Saturday.
He also gave credit to Ben Jackson and Parth Shah for their contributions.
Sobrato will be off for the next two weeks before it heads to the Rosenbrock Tournament.
Letts said his boys will be practicing on finishing the counter attack along with attacking some of the defensive formations they saw last weekend.
