Sobrato hit the midway point of its volleyball season 5-5 overall, 3-3 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League after sweeping Gunderson 25-14, 125-13, 25-14.
On the heels of losses to Pioneer and Prospect, co-coaches Kevin and Rosemary Miller were looking for the Bulldogs to bounce back. And that’s just what they did in the rout of the Grizzlies.
Sophomore hitter Jared Mammen continued his solid play with 17 kills, 14 digs, seven aces and one block. Sophomore setter Shawn Tharayil also had a big gamed with 28 assists, three blocks and two digs. Middle blockers Sims Jose and Adam Morales combined for 13 blocks to lead the defense.
“Youth and lack of playing time (we only see three teams) provide little game experience for the team,” Kevin Miller said. “And, having those opportunities really help, when a team is faced with pressure games.”
In the four-team division, Sobrato is third but just one game out of second and two out of first. Therefore, the order of finish will be determined in the third round that begins April 24 for the Bulldogs at home against Pioneer.
JV: Sobrato is sitting at 2-6, 1-3, after a 26-28, 27-25, 15-3 loss to Prospect. Jacob Maack had eight kills, eight blocks and seven digs to pace the Bulldogs.

San Jose – Gary Leung continued his superb play this season, shooting an ever-par 36 in Tuesday’s match against San Benito at Cinnabar Hills.
That round tied him with the Haybalers’ Chad Stanger for medalist honors.
“Leung birdied the last hole to stay with him,” Sobrato coach Norm Brown said.
Ricky Hinman carded a 41, Ron Gifford and Doug Bennett shot 44 and Michael Moran shot 54.
“Anything in the 40s is pretty good at Cinnabar,” Brown said.
Sobrato also played North Salinas on Thursday, with the results not available at press time.
The Bulldogs are back in action Monday when they take on cross-town rival Live Oak at 3pm at Gilroy Golf Course.
