Gilroy – Megan Smart made things happen at the top of Gavilan’s batting order.
She was noticed by more than her coach and teammates. The sophomore from Live Oak was named to the first team of the Coast Conference South Division all-star team as voted on by coaches.
“Megan had a way of getting on base and making things happen for us,” Rams’ coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “We’ll miss her and the other three sophomores we had on the team.”
One of those sophomores, Jen McBain, was named a second-team pitcher. Joining her were freshmen Amanda Rosevear at catcher and Melissa Gaxiola at middle infield. Freshman Amanda Perez was honorable mention as a middle infielder.
“I was happy with the way we finished (the season) and that our girls were recognized,” said Dequin-Thompson, the second-year head coach who guided Gavilan to 14 wins after going winless last year. “We beat two teams (West Valley and Hartnell) that we were not able to beat earlier in the season. We’re looking good for next year. I really believe we can be an upper division team next year.”
Although Gavilan finished fifth in the six-team South Division, the Rams had eight wins and beat six different Coast Conference teams. And, their overall record of 14-27 was third best among South Division teams.
“The girls built the foundation for something next year,” Dequin-Thompson said. “They’re a good group. The kids we’re bringing in are good. I’m excited. I can’t wait until next year. I am so excited about what we did this year and what we can do next year.”
