Olin announced this week that two groundwater treatment systems
installed in August on the West San Martin Water Works wells are up
and running. The wells are producing approximately 600 gallons per
minute. The three wells tested at below 4 parts per billion (or
nondetect), 6 and 8 ppb in early February, according to Bob
Ukestad, manager of the family-owned WSMWW. Four ppb is the point
at which the state mandates water customers must be notified. The
company installed the systems to repair the damage caused by
perchlorate leaching, over 40 years, into the groundwater from its
former highway safety flare plant at Tennant and Railroad avenues
in Morgan Hill. The Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central
Coast District based in San Luis Obispo ordered Olin to remediate
the problem, which it has been doing, first by providing free
bottled water to affected residents, testing wells and now by
installing the treatment plant on the well that serves 250 homes
and the South County Government Center at Monterey Road and
Highland Avenue in San Martin.
