San Martin – Rosie Mammini is closing in on 89, has a bad knee, and doesn’t get around as much as she’d like, but she will come out tonight to be honored by the San Martin Neighborhood Alliance.

Mammini will be recognized as Senior of the Year for her tireless work on behalf of the community at the alliance’s annual spag-hetti social at the San Martin Lions Club Hall. She is the award’s first recipient.

“I’m honored, but I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done and I hope I’ve done some good to help people,” Mammini said. “The community has done a lot for me.”

Mammini is the matriarch of a clan of three children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandkids. In 1979, Mammini was named Citizen of the Year by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, and in 2001, she was the first female president of the San Martin Lions Club.

When Mammini arrived as 4-year-old in 1920, San Martin was blanketed with vineyards. Grapes eventually gave way to prune and apricot orchards. When the bottom dropped out of the fruit market, Mammini’s late husband, Louis, began growing row crops.
