Lourdes Robledo, a second-grade teacher at San Martin Gwinn Elementary School in San Martin, will be one of 31 teachers honored by the Santa Clara County Office of Education Sept. 26 at the 44th annual Teacher Recognition Celebration at the Heritage Theatre in Campbell.
Presented by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, the recognition ceremony is the oldest and largest of its kind in California. Also being honored are recipients of the 2013 Texas Instruments STEM Teaching Awards.
Robledo was named the 2013 Teacher of the Year by the Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers in March.
During the Federation’s March 27 general meeting at Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill, fellow teacher Denise Simmons praised Robledo for her more than three decades of dedication to local students.
“Each student in her class is engaged in the subject matter, whether it is writing, reading, or math,” said Simmons of Robledo. “Lourdes knows exactly where each student is in his or her learning and works cooperatively with the students to set high, but achievable goals.”
In her instruction, Robledo, who has taught in MHUSD for 34 years at San Martin Gwinn, has used Readers’ and Writers’ Workshops and GLAD strategies to improve student performance.
She also taught Spanish to approximately 15 non-Spanish speaking students, started a cooking club and spearheaded the Migrant Summer School program at San Martin Gwinn.
“Not only does Lourdes help students to further their education, she also continues to take classes to learn new teaching strategies and concepts,” said Simmons of Lourdes.
Each year, teachers submit names of other teachers and their accomplishments to the union, which then makes the official choice.
