San Jose State will offer an upper division course at Gavilan College’s main campus in Gilroy starting in September. The class will be the first in a series offered through a new partnership which will bring upper division classes to Gavilan on a regular basis.

Although San Jose State has offered telecourses on the Gavilan College campus for years, this will be the first time a traditional class will be offered.

“The closer we (work) with San Jose State, the better it is for all of the students who come through the Gavilan program and transfer out,” Gavilan President Steve Kinsella said. “We expect there to be more classes offered in (the spring 2004 semester).”

More than a year of planning went into the formation of the program that brings the course to Gavilan. Known as University Center, the program is designed to make it easier for South Valley residents to attend SJSU.

“Distance can be a barrier to education, with long commuting times preventing students from pursuing their goals,” said Susan Meyers, SJSU’s dean of education. “We will bring the university to the community … .”

The first class to be offered, called Concepts of Childhood, fulfills a general education requirement for any major at San Jose State. It will be taught by Marlene Bumgarner, who is a full-time faculty member at Gavilan.

Students who have already been admitted to the university can enroll as they would for any other SJSU course. Gavilan College students who are enrolled in at least six units may cross-enroll for only $10 in addition to fees and tuition.

Students must pass the San Jose State writing skills test prior to enrolling in this class, which will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15-5:30 p.m.
