Eight local elementary schools gathered at Paradise Park Friday for a non-competitive soccer tournament.

Playing for fun and good sportsmanship, sixth graders from Paradise Valley, San Martin, Charter, Barrett, Los Paseos, Jackson, El Toro and Nordstrom elementary schools battled through four rounds of co-ed soccer to claim the title.

Sixth grade teacher at Paradise Elementary and tournament coordinator Jim Wright said it is a privilege for the kids to participate.

“The kids earned the right to come out here and play with good behavior during school and by getting good grades,” Wright said. “It gives a chance for children with all abilities to participate, so kids with less sports experience get the opportunity to play in a tournament.”

While no awards were given out to the best players or best teams, the sixth graders from Barrett Elementary went undefeated, with one tie.

Charter Elementary was also undefeated, but had two tie games.

Parents and teachers helped coached the teams, something that Wright, who has coordinated the event for three years now, was thankful for.

“I was very fortunate to have a parent coach the PV Panthers,” Wright said. “And he even brought a PV banner.”

As a part of the Health and Wellness curriculum in the school district, the sixth grade soccer tournament is meant to get kids active and promote camaraderie.
