With top single Jimmy Shedden out, Live Oak beat Del Mar 5-2
Tuesday in division play
MORGAN HILL — With his top single, Jimmy Shedden, unavailable for Tuesday’s game against Del Mar, Live Oak tennis coach Brad Leach either had to forfeit Shedden’s match or shift his entire team to fill the slot.
Leach chose the latter, and his Acorns met the challenge.
Live Oak split the singles games and took 2 of 3 in doubles play to beat the Dons 5-2 in a West Valley Division match at Live Oak High School.
The Acorns’ Derek Johnson defeated Le Nguyen 6-4, 6-2, and his twin brother, Dylan Johnson, outlasted Del Mar lefty Bo McDowells 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) in a pivotal match that lasted 2 1/2 hours. Live Oak’s top pair Shane Herber and Sean Sullivan downed Scott Anderson and Jonathon Roberts 7-5, 6-4; and Spencer McClellan and Q. Farooqui beat Robbie Hubillo and Scott Ohalbren of the Dons, 6-3, 6-1.
Del Mar’s Kevin Chau tipped Ryan Campbell in the top singles match, 6-2, 6-4, and Sean Stone outlasted the Acorns’ Gabriel Fluckiger in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 1-3.
Live Oak (3-2 league) will host Willow Glen at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
