At the library
Science junkies can get their fix at the Morgan Hill Public Library. Many new Sci-Tech books are here to answer questions about the mysteries of the universe from the inner workings of the cell to the marvels of wildlife to time travel.

A few recent acquisitions include the following:

• Tinkering with Eden by Kim Todd. Todd tells the intriguing history of the introduction of nonnative species in the United States and the often unwelcome impact exotics have on the ecosystem. Exotics include the now common starlings, pigeons, and house sparrows.

• Atom: An Odyssey from the Big Bang to Life on Earth by Lawrence M. Krauss.

The natural history of a single oxygen atom is chronicled from the birth of its subatomic particles 12 billion years ago to its death billions of years in the future.

• The Way of the Cell: Molecules, Organisms and the Order of Life by Franklin M. Harold. Harold tackles the largest of questions (What is Life?) within the smallest of settings (the cell).

• Time Travel in Einstein’s Universe: The Physical Possibilities of Travel Through Time By Richard J. Gott. A lively discussion of the possibilities of time travel.

• The Birds of Heaven: Travels with Cranes By Peter Matthiessen.Acclaimed naturalist and travel writer records his journeys in search of cranes and the work of scientists striving to preserve these stately birds.

• Aquagenesis: The Origin and Evolution of Life in the Sea by Richard Ellis. Ellis offers a smooth-flowing chronicle of the evolution of marine life from single celled pioneers to today’s creatures.

• Dinner at the New Gene Café: How Genetic Engineering is Changing What we Eat, How we Live, and the Global Politics of Food by Bill Lambrecht. Investigation into Monsanto corporation’s controversial forays into producing genetically altered foods.
