Dear Editor,

I was glad to read that the city has decided not to put a tax proposal on the ballot this year. During the conversations with the city I attended, it was clear that running the city more efficiently, increases in regular income, and making smarter spending decisions will bring things into balance.

As a former member of the Parks and Recreation Commission, I saw numerous costly errors made by city staff, such as overpaying for construction services, which is causing a reduction of tennis course construction this year, not maintaining our parks well enough, to undercharging out of city residents and organizations for use of our new excellent facilities.

The city needs to run more like a professional organization and think more business like. Most businesses don’t have the ability to write $1.5 million overdrafts every year. They should treat our money like their own.

Although Commission members and the community at large make smart recommendations based on our professional experience, staff at City Hall continue to not heed our advice and accept overrated bids. This needs to change immediately.

Hopefully the new incoming council and mayor will start to listen closely to the citizens here, and use their power to convince the taxpayer- paid staff to more carefully and efficiently spend our money.

I also wanted to thank Mayor Dennis Kennedy for his years of excellent leadership and wish the new mayor and council all the best!
