A trumpet player’s presence is usually noisily obvious but instrumentalist Mike Rubino has gone beyond just sound. He has made a huge impression on his community and, for his efforts, has been chosen to receive the 2005 Distinguished Leadership Award.

Rubino, who led the Live Oak High School Emerald Regime marching band to many victories over 30 years, will be honored at a Tribute Dinner and Benefit to be held at the CordeValle Lodge in San Martin on July 23.

“Mike Rubino’s educational and musical legacy span continents and generations,” said Steve Tate, president of Leadership Morgan Hill’s Board of Directors. “The 2005 recipient, like those before him, embodies everything that is great about Leadership and the far-reaching impact it has on both our community and society.”

Roger Knopf and the Guglielmo Family received the award in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

“I was tremendously surprised and very honored,” Rubino said about the honor.

Rubino retired from the Morgan Hill School District in October after a 33-year career. Beside the teaching and mentoring in school age music, Rubino – and his wife Cricket – led many band tours abroad that introduced more than 800 Live Oak High School students to the cultural and musical diversity in such far-flung lands as China, the Soviet Union, Japan, Vietnam, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

Rubino has been a vocal and active supporter of the district’s elementary school music programs. Through his sheer determination and commitment, Morgan Hill elementary school students are still taught music education beginning in the fourth grade. Budget cuts have eliminated many music programs from state’s public schools.

The Leadership Excellence Award was established to recognize an individual or individuals whose vision and leadership advance the spirit of community and charity; reflect courage and insight; and inspire others to lead in a like manner. The award may cite a singular outstanding moment that manifests clear and defined leadership skills or it may memorialize a prolonged tenure of continuous and meritorious leadership activities.

Recipients are selected by a panel of community leaders and former Leadership Excellence Award winners.
