Morgan Hill – A single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue Wednesday morning may have been caused in part by a road rage incident, police say.
Gilbert Ruiz, 27, of Morgan Hill, was transported by helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center as a precaution after the collision, which occurred shortly before 7am.
Alcohol and drugs were not a factor, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.
“We are investigating the possibility of it being a road rage incident, based on preliminary witness contact,” he added.
Police said the accident was caused by driving at an unsafe speed for conditions. Whether he was speeding as a result of road rage is still under investigation, Swing said.
Ruiz was driving eastbound on West Dunne Avenue in a Ford Explorer and was making a left turn onto Monterey Road. He hit a patch of wet roadway and lost control, skidding into a tree.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. One lane of Monterey Road was closed for approximately an hour while emergency personnel tended to Ruiz and officers cleared the scene. Ruiz was transported by ambulance to the soccer fields on Condit Road where the helicopter landed.
