Wes Rolley’s Web site (http://www.refpub.com/PomboWatch/) tracking the actions of our Congressional representative Richard Pombo is truly justified. Pombo is an anti-environmental extremist and goes out of his way to attack our nation’s environmental protection policies.
Rep. Pombo on Dec. 23, 2003 wrote a letter to one of our larger Bay Area newspapers condemning the Endangered Species Act. He argues that the Act is a failure since no animal, bird or fish on the list has ever come off the list. This is not true. President Clinton removed the bald eagle from the list and others. To my knowledge none has fallen off (become extinct). This in itself more than suggests that the Act does have success and can be justified, for stabilization is the first step towards recovery.
As chairman of the House Committee on Resources, Pombo falls short in understanding and fulfilling the role of a good steward. He has no background, degree, skills, knowledge or abilities to hold this office. He gains merit from the Bush administration for waving an anti-environmental banner and for being foolish enough to attack environmental policies that we as Californians hold to be precious.
In his role as chairman, he has a tremendous responsibility to the people of this country to protect and preserve. For once our fish, birds and wildlife become extinct, costs can not be measured in economic terms alone, for there are generations ahead of us who will be asking why. Disappointedly, I am not sure Richard Pombo has any answers, and his false argument against the Endangered Species Act has me wondering why he is chairman of this important committee at all. In this case the “wolf” is truly watching over the “sheep”. His underlying motive is to repeal this Act at the bidding of the Bush administration and to appease his corporate interests.
Among his other noteworthy actions, he voted to approve the distribution of water to agricultural interests in Northern California that lowered the water level of the Klamath River, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of migrating salmon. He voted against cleaning up our toxic waste sites and voted to approve drilling off our blue Pacific Coast, in the sensitive Alaskan wilderness and on our treasured national monuments. For more information on his voting record, please visit the League of Conservation Voters Web Site (http://www.lcv.org/).
Pombo is the wrong congressman for Morgan Hill and for California. He represents corporate interests and special interests above the public’s interest. Wes Rolley’s Web site is a good beginning in understanding this anti-environmental extremist; it’s an understanding that should lead to a no vote in the upcoming November election.
