Have you heard about the Relay for Life?

The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society asks teams to gather pledges and to keep at least one member walking during the 24-hour event, which symbolizes the 24-hour a day battle cancer patients wage or survival.

Morgan Hill’s second Relay for Life, held May 3-4 at Community Park, drew fewer teams but raised more money than last year. At the end of the Relay, they’d pulled in more than $160,000, with checks still coming.

Especially given the drenching weather and the tight economy, that’s impressive. We think organizers, volunteers, walkers, sponsors and donors all deserve a round of applause for a job well done.

Cancer has touched nearly everyone. Almost everyone knows someone with cancer or has battled the deadly disease themselves. According to the American Cancer Society, 150 people die each day from cancer, and 15 million Californians will receive a cancer diagnosis this year.

Finding ways to treat the disease is an cause everyone can support – and we’re proud of how thoroughly the South Valley community has rallied behind the event.

If you haven’t participated, you’re really missing out on a great time. Despite the fact that cancer is a serious disease and the cause is important, Relay for Life organizers go to great lengths to make sure the spirit of the event is fun.

Teams pitch tents and create a festival atmosphere. From music to food, from themed laps to children’s activities, from camping out to pitching in, everyone has a good time at a Relay for Life event.

If you’d like to support the American Cancer Society by participating in a South Valley Relay for Life, the Gilroy event is coming up soon. It will be held June 21-22 at the ranch side of Christmas Hill Park. It’s not to late to start a team. Just visit visit www.cancer.org or call Gabriel Nino at 891-7897 for more information.

If you’d like to register or volunteer for Morgan Hill’s 2004 Relay for Life or even make a contribution this year, contact Ingrid Wafelbakker at 776-8987.
