  • Registration is now open for the spring 2011 youth volleyball season. The USYVL is bringing a fun-filled season of volleyball to the community this spring. Children and their parents are invited to enjoy instructional volleyball practices and games that help build self-esteem and confidence. The eight-week league in Morgan Hill at Paradise Park will run from April to June of 2011.

The USYVL is also looking for volunteer coaches, site directors and clinicians (volleyball instructors) for the spring 2011 season. Volunteers must be great with kids, dependable and enthusiastic.

Teen Wii tournament

  • Meet new friends or just hang out at a teen Wii tournament from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Centennial Recreation Center, 171 W. Edmundson Ave. The event is for those 12 to 18.

Emerald Regime Crab Feed

  • Live Oak Emerald Regime’s annual “Crab Feed” is Jan. 15 at the Morgan Hill Buddhist Building, 16150 Murphy Avenue. Tickets are $45. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner is served at 7 p.m.

Music will be provided by Live Oak High School Jazz Band. Tickets can be purchased from any marching band or color guard student or call 313-5401 or e-mail lo********@*****on.net.

A chicken dinner can be pre-ordered for those who do not eat crab. All proceeds benefit the Live Oak Emerald Regime.

‘Autumn Gem’ comes to Morgan Hill

  • The documentary film “Autumn Gem” explores the extraordinary life of Chinese revolutionary heroine Qiu Jin (1875-1907). A radical women’s rights activist, Qiu Jin (Autumn Gem) boldly challenged traditional gender roles and demanded equal rights and opportunities for women. She led an armed uprising against the corrupt Qing Dynasty, for which she was arrested and executed. Called a “Chinese Joan of Arc,” she is celebrated as a national heroine in China today. The film will be shown from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 19 at the Morgan Hill House at Villa Mira Monte, 17860 Monterey Road.

The hour-long film is produced and directed by two Santa Clara-based Chinese American filmmakers, Rae Chang and Adam Tow. They will attend the screening and participate in a question and answer session afterward.

Info night for preschool, kindergarten

  • Come to an informational evening presented by Las Madres of Morgan Hill where parents can meet educators and learn about Morgan Hill pre-schools and learning options for children. About 20 schools from Morgan Hill and Gilroy will be in attendance. The free event takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.

Learn to show, not tell

  • Martha Engber, author of “The Wind Thief,” will shed light on one of the most oft-spoken, confounding, frustrating pieces of advice in all writerdom – show, don’t tell. So if you have attempted to show your story only to be accused of telling, bring a segment of your story and take refuge with Martha! Through writing exercises and discussion, she’ll give you the tools to show and tell as you see fit.

The workshop takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 at BookSmart, 80 E. 2nd St.

Help those with diabetes

  • Enjoy a fun and festive wine tasting event complete with gourmet appetizers and dessert bites at the Diabetes Society’s “Camp For Kids With Diabetes,” from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday Jan. 30 at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road.

In addition, there will be a raffle for gourmet food and wine baskets, and a live auction. Proceeds will provide scholarships so all children with diabetes can attend Diabetes Society’s camps.

Tickets are $50 each, or a table of nine for $400, payable to the Diabetes Society Camp Fundraiser and mail to: Lion Peter Herrera, Milpitas Host Lions Club, 430 Evans Road, Milpitas, CA 95035 by Jan. 23.

  • Meet and compete with other sudoku and crossword puzzle fans from across the Bay Area and beyond during a fun-filled weekend of solving puzzles at the Morgan Hill Library, 660 W. Main Ave. Free workshops Saturday, Jan. 29 on a variety of puzzle themes led by world-class puzzle experts. Sudoku tournament Sunday morning, crossword tournament (featuring yet-to-be published NY Times puzzles from Will Shortz) Sunday afternoon. This event benefits the Morgan Hill Library Foundation.
