A Morgan Hill police officer with Pax the dog.

I noticed that the Tuesday edition of Red Phone, about the
protective vest for Pax the police dog, says that MHDA raised
$75,000 for the purchase and training of Pax – which is totally
wrong. The Morgan Hill Downtown Association’s efforts were only for
the protective vest. The training and purchase of Pax was done
through the very dedicated efforts of the Community Law Enforcement
Foundation.

“CLEFF worked very hard to bring Pax to Morgan Hill and they deserve every ounce of credit for making that possible. The Morgan Hill Downtown Association was the organization that headed up a community-wide fundraising effort to secure the needed funds for the protective vest but only the protective vest. Your Red Phone response about the cost of the vest and the amount raised through those efforts is accurate as is the statement about waiting for Pax to fill out and get to the size that he needs to be for a proper fitting.

“It would be my hope that you will print a correction in Friday’s paper about this error and that you will correct the MH Times Web site immediately… Please inform your readers that the $75K came through CLEFF’s efforts.”

Dear Watchdog,

Consider this a correction. To reiterate the facts at hand: CLEFF worked hard to raise $75,000 to bolster MHPD’s canine unit, resulting in the purchase of Pax in July. Then, MHDA helped raise around $1,000 for Pax’s protective vest. Bonus fun fact: the name “Pax” is Latin for “peace.” Chew on that, readers, and thanks, Watchdog, for your hawkish reading of the Times, and for keeping Red Phone on its paws – er, toes.

Basketball hoop conundrum

“I have a basketball hoop in my backyard, it’s been unused and in a corner for about 2 years, but I don’t know how to dispose of it. Are there any places here in town where I can donate it to?”

Dear Non-dribbler,

Red Phone can think of three places you can try. There’s an online group at yahoo.com where you can post stuff you’re looking to get rid of, and, likewise, pick up stuff you’ve had a hankering for but don’t necessarily want to rush out and buy. It’s called Morgan Hill Freecycle. Get it: recycle, freecycle… Red Phone loves a good pun. If that doesn’t work, Non-dribbler, check out the monolith of free online advertising, craigslist.org. They’ve got a section for posting free items. And, don’t forget, you can always run a classified ad in the good old Morgan Hill Times, to sell it. In Red Phone’s book, that last suggestion is a slam dunk.
