Red Phone, with the threat of water rationing upon us this
summer, I am curious why the city of Morgan Hill has been one of
the worst offenders? On the dividers located down the center of
Cochrane Road down by Monterey Road, the sprinklers run daily for
hours at a time and are broken so that they spray in many different
directions. Even during the rain they are running and waste a
tremendous amount of water. Could this be looked into? If we are to
cut back, shouldn’t the city also cut back? Thank you.

“Given our current water shortage in California and the recent heavy rain in Morgan Hill perhaps you could ask the city management why they continue to water the medians late in the evenings most days. Come to that, why do they also overspray the road on either side of the median – last time I checked black top does not need watering!! One more thing, perhaps they could repair the median sprinkler on Cochrane Road, about 100 feet northeast of the Butterfield Boulevard intersection, it does a fine imitation of a fountain every time it runs. Thanks.”
Red Phone: Dear Concerned About Water, Red Phone got in touch with Anne Beale, the maintenance supervisor for the city’s public works department. She said city staff is always concerned about reports of water being wasted on the landscape medians especially now, during the winter, when all of the city’s median irrigation systems are supposed to be turned off.
“After hearing this report we checked the city’s irrigation controllers on Cochrane Road – and found that they are all shut off as they should be,” she said. “The callers must have observed the sprinklers on one of the medians on Cochrane Road that are maintained by an adjacent business park. We have notified the business park property manager to have the park’s irrigation systems checked and adjusted as needed.”
She said if residents spot irrigation systems in the roadway medians that are malfunctioning they want to know. Residents are urged to contact the Department of Public Works Streets Division via the city Web site at www.morgan-hill.ca.gov, or by calling 776-7333, she said. “We are serious about conserving water and promise to respond as quickly as possible.”
