“Red Phone, cars and trucks race at more than 50 mph down Murphy Avenue between Dunne and Diane avenues. What can be done to keep the traffic down to the 30 mph speed limit? The excessive speed is not only dangerous for the residents of Kelly Park Circle and the adjacent neighborhoods who walk to the park and local businesses, but it also adds to the already irritating noise pollution. I am not proposing any stop signs but rather a series of bumps in the road like those in Holiday Lakes Estates. This will help keep the traffic to a steady and low speed thus reducing our noise pollution and making it safer for residents.”
Red Phone: Dear Keep it Slow, Red Phone contacted Scott Creer, senior civil engineer, who said Murphy Avenue is designated as an arterial street in the circulation element of the city’s current general plan. As such, the city would not consider installing speed bumps on this section of roadway.
“Speed bumps, as a rule, are only used on local/residential streets such as those found in Holiday Lakes Estates where the designated speed limit is 25 mph,” Creer said. “The city is in the process of conducting a citywide speed study of its non-residential streets. This section of Murphy Avenue will be surveyed to determine the current traffic volume and speeds on this section of roadway. The findings and any recommended changes will be part of the 2010 citywide traffic survey report which will be completed this fall.”
Red Phone forwarded the matter to Morgan Hill police who will step up random patrols in the area.
Hope that answers your question, good caller.
