“I’m calling regarding the Web poll you ran about the Friday Night Music Series. Seems the public, by a 67 to 33 percent margin, favored keeping the music series downtown, but the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t listen to the people. This is another blow to the people of Morgan Hill. We went every Friday night for the past seven to eight years, but this year a group of 20 of us are going to Sinaloa’s for dinner then going home to play cards.”

Red Phone: Dear Going Home. A couple of things. The music series was moved, but it remains downtown. Second, the Chamber of Commerce represents all the businesses that belong to the organization, not the people of Morgan Hill. The idea is to put on a great event, and have people stroll downtown, past shops and restaurants, perhaps stopping to dine. Finally, Red Phone believes change is hard, but that over time, people will get used to the idea, and enjoy a short walk. Here’s to hoping residents at least give the new venue a try. You like it, come again. You don’t like it, stay home.

All those arrested are named in blotter

“Red Phone, I have a question about the printed police blotter. How is it the Times is able to print the names of people who are picked up for suspicion of driving under the influence before the Morgan Hill Police Department makes a police report available so the suspect can know if charges will be brought.”

Red Phone: Dear Charges Brought, the Times prints the names of everyone arrested in the city by Morgan Hill police and in unincorporated areas of the county by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department. It often takes days for officers to finish reports and submit them to the District Attorney’s office for charging. Anyone who is found not guilty, or if charges are reduced or dropped can request a correction run in the paper, and the item will be removed from the Web site. You should know though, that of the thousands of arrests printed, perhaps two people have come in with verification of dropped, or reduced charges.

And, Red Phone believes readers know that the arrestees have not been found guilty, rather they were arrested on suspicion of the various charges. Thanks for reading, good caller.
