Dear Red Phone, as much as we love animals, we have a neighbor

put their dog out, maybe when they leave for a period or go to

“Dear Red Phone, as much as we love animals, we have a neighbor who owns a dog that barks for hours at a time. We suspect that they put their dog out, maybe when they leave for a period or go to work, and the dog will proceed to bark, bark and bark. It’s almost always at the same time in the afternoon and sometimes in the mornings. One neighbor to the east of us decided to talk to them about the dog and they were told to mind their own business. We are certain that we are not the only neighbors around who are annoyed with the constant barking. Is there a Morgan Hill ordinance regarding barking dogs?”
Dear Barked, yes there is an ordinance that bans loud and incessant noises. Red Phone contacted Police Chief Bruce Cumming, who said residents often report barking dogs. Call the police department’s non-emergency number 779-2101 – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – when the dog is barking.
“We will send an officer as available and talk to the dog owner or if they are not home leave a note,” Cumming said. “We will talk to the dog owner and if the problem persists (an officer) will cite the owner.”
As an alternative a report can be filed online by going to www.morgan-hill,ca,gov, though the response won’t be as immediate.
The never-ending ‘hump’ debate
“My commute takes me over the downtown humps four times a day. Usually the vehicle in front of me is rolling over them at 5 mph, but if not, I take ’em at 25 mph and I can do that with my travel mug of coffee in hand! I drive a 10-year-old Toyota Siena minivan. I’m st’hump’ed.”
and …
“Yes, you can go over them at 25 miles an hour. You could also go over them at 80 miles an hour if you wanted to. The point is not that motorists can’t drive over them at 25 miles an hour. The point is that in doing so your brain is RATTLED at that speed. I too drive an SUV. It is NOT possible to drive over them at 25 miles an hour without startling affects. It had to have been a man that said the bumps are OK at 25 miles an hour. You, too, must be a man. Ask ANY woman with breasts of ANY size how these speed bumps feel. Her response: TERRIBLE.”
Dear St’hump’ed, you must be a man. Dear RATTLED, wow. First, please don’t try it at 80 mph. They were designed to travel across at 25 mph, but perhaps not in all vehicles. Seems you can drive over them at 25 in a minivan, but a woman in an SUV – I can only imagine. Even police traverse them at 25. On the way to work – about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday – one of Morgan Hill’s finest in the left lane took the ‘hump’ at 25 mph at the same time as Red Phone took the one in the right lane at 25 mph. Both cruised over with nary a jolt. So, to put the issue to rest, take them at 25 if you can. If you can’t, stay out of downtown. Oh, OK, take them at a safe speed so you don’t rattle anything important.
