Bad bikers need traffic lessons
A caller dialed the red phone this week to air a complaint about a group of bikers that cruises through town:
“Hi, I have a traffic issue that I’d like to have aired. Every Saturday morning – I think they’re members of specialized bikes and others on bikes – they run red lights, they ignore all traffic rules, they flip people off, they’re just congregated in groups all over town. It’s 10 o’clock and I almost hit two of them. I want a note made that there are traffic laws and they should be observed by bicyclists as well as pedestrians and motorists.”
Red Phone made a call to the Morgan Hill Police Department to get some help from Commander Terrie Booten to answer this one. Booten told Red Phone that bicyclists need to adhere to the same rules as vehicles. They need to stop for red lights, stay on the same side as the flow of traffic, etc. If they run a red light on a bike they can be cited. The offense is an infraction and it usually needs to be observed by officers. If there’s a chronic problem, people can call the police department’s traffic hotline number at 776-0460, and include a description of the problem, where it’s happening and at what times.
No speed limit at Sobrato
“I was walking down Burnett Avenue the other day and an SUV came by me going about 70mph. I looked up and down Burnett at Sobrato High School and I noticed there is no speed limit sign, no 25 mph or 30 or anything. This is also by the mobile home park where people should be driving slower. Last year I guess there was no 25 mph by Sobrato High School also. So, I just wanted to let you know. Thank you.”
Thanks for the report. Red Phone called and spoke to Scott Creer of the Morgan Hill Public Works office. Apparently the road was recently widened and the city began a speed survey to determine how fast was safe for residents. Creer and his crew at the PW office aren’t sure there is a speed limit in place right now, but within the next week 35mph signs will be posted and the limit will go into effect. There are school zone signs in the area, however, which means when kids are in class the speed limit is 25mph. Call the police’s traffic hotline at 776-0460 to report speeders.
