Stupid parkers
“I think some of these people who drive are either stupid or
don’t care about other people. I have to use a handicap spot and
have a handicap sticker. Some of these people will park halfway in
their spot and half in the handicap spot and people who are
handicap either can’t get into their car
or get out of their car.

“I think some of these people who drive are either stupid or don’t care about other people. I have to use a handicap spot and have a handicap sticker. Some of these people will park halfway in their spot and half in the handicap spot and people who are handicap either can’t get into their car or get out of their car. Like I said, I think these people are stupid or don’t care. When I open my door, I have to open too wide; if I hit the other car, I will dent it and I don’t care. If I have to I will call the police and have their car towed away at the owner’s expense. It is not just bad in Morgan Hill, people do the same thing in San Jose. I just wanted people to know that people do need to get into their cars.”

Parking in a handicap spot without a permit is a serious offense that can land someone a fine of at least $250. Morgan Hill Police Chief Bruce Cumming said he has received similar complaints and has his officers actively looking for people who illegally park in a handicap spot. The officers will determine if someone is significantly intruding into a handicap a spot or not. If a car is only a few inches in, it will not be cited. People should not park in the spots even if they think they will only be a minute. Cumming urges anyone who sees someone who is parked illegally in a handicap spot or parked too closely to a handicap space to call the police department at 779-2101, not 911. He also said if someone has a permit, but it falls out of view, the police will rescind the ticket.

As to the denting of someone’s door, just don’t do it, Cumming suggests. Never take the law into your own hands. Denting someone’s car is considered vandalism and carries a minimum fine of $500 or six months in jail, not to mention the potential for a lawsuit to fix the car. Cumming also warned damaging someone’s car could enrage the owner, potentially leading to violence. So remember, the best recourse is to call police and let them handle the situation.
