Gilroy Folk Say They are to Educated

“I resent something in the article that Matt King wrote about the Morgan Hill Trader Joe’s. I’ve been in this town 81 years and I feel it’s an insult in this article to say that Morgan Hill is more educated and wealthy. I can remember way back when that town was absolutely nothing. I resent the fact that they put that in the paper, about it being more educated. Definitely.”

“A few of us ladies were discussing the article regarding the Trader Joe’s coming to Morgan Hill. We are offended with the statement made that Gilroy people are not educated or financially able to have a Trader Joe’s store. What a snobbish thing to say.”

“My comment pertains to the comments about Trader Joe’s coming to Morgan Hill because people are more educated than Gilroy. Big deal. You give me all of the box stores that we have, you can buy anything you want. Gilroy has planned retail shopping very well. It’s all in town. Not 10 miles away. It’s location, location, location. Thank you.”

Your trusty Red Phone went to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site at www.census.gov, as did the Times reporter, to see what it could find out. The numbers speak for themselves.

According to the most recent census statistics, Gilroy’s median household income stands at $62,135; Morgan Hill’s median household income is $81,958.

The percentage of Gilroy’s population that has graduated from high school, as of 2000 statistics, is 70.1; 86.8 percent of Morgan Hill’s population has a high school diploma.

And lastly, the percentage of Gilroy’s residents that have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher is 19.1; Morgan Hill’s population? 33.5 percent.

Solicitors Go Away, and Take Your Trash with You

“Yes. I have a question regarding annoying solicitors that come on to our property and leave their literature on the doorknob or their business card on the ground by the door. Are there any laws against trespassing? I have called to tell them not to leave their things because I am not interested in their products or services. Yet every time, whether it be a Realtor, tree-cutting service or pizza place, they still do it. How do I deal with people like that? Do I bring charges against them? It is a violation of my privacy, and they are trespassing on my property.”

Red Phone

Unfortunately caller, you’ll have to put down your shotgun (unless you live in the unincorporated area of the city). All solicitors are required to obtain a permit from the city in order to peddle their trash.

Some people like you have called the solicitor to request that they leave them alone. However there is no Do Not Solicit Registry like the the National Do Not Call Registry in which people can remove their phone number. People can go to www.donotcall.gov to have their phone number removed.

Calling the individual solicitor may or may not work because they don’t keep such a list. There are other tricks people have used like returning the trash to their place of business. Some people even get creative with the remarks they leave on them as well.

“It is not as much a privacy issue as a littering issue,” said Beth Givens, the director of Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (www.privacyrights.org). “The flyers tend to blow around. Because they cannot by law put them in the mailboxes, you’ll see a lot in screen doors. It could also be a personal safety issue as well. My advice would be if you are going to be gone to have a neighbor pick up any flyers so you are not sending the wrong signal to thieves.”

The Morgan Hill Municipal Code (8.16.170) says “No person shall throw, deposit or distribute any commercial or noncommercial handbill upon any private premises, if requested by anyone thereon not to do so, or if there is placed on such premises in a conspicuous position near the entrance thereof, a sign bearing the words: “No Trespassing,” “No Peddlers or Agents,” “No Advertisements” or any similar notice, indicating in any matter that the occupants of such premises do not desire to be molested, or have their right of privacy disturbed, or to have any such handbills left upon such premises.”

So if you have a sign up or if you have requested to not have trash on your property, you can call the police.
