Things that go bump in the night
“I have really noisy neighbors that play their loud music at all hours of the day and night. Yesterday I went outside and they had all four of the doors of their car and their trunk open and their stereo on full blast. The bass from the car stereo was so loud it was rattling the pictures on the wall inside of my house. I don’t have anything against music – even the rap that they were blaring – but what can people do when their neighbors are disturbing the peace like that. I’ve complained to our landlord, but they live out of town and really don’t care what’s going on. Can the police do something like tell them to shut up or even write them a ticket?”
Red Phone called Morgan Hill Police Commander Joe Sampson and he said that the city has a ordinance to quiet down at 11pm until 7am. A complaint should be loud enough to plainly disturb neighbors within 50 feet of the offender. Just like any other municipal code, the police will generally go out the first time they receive a complaint and give a warning to the offender so they are aware of the problem. If they tell them to turn down the noise and get a second call, the police will issue an infraction, which ranges from $100 to $500. If they have to go again, for a third complaint, the minimum cost for an infraction is $500. However, Sampson told Red Phone that usually people will calm down – unless its a big party – but most people will turn their stereo down and be quiet. The main municipal code sections can be found on the city website at morganhill.ca.gov.
If your neighbors are loud, call the Morgan Hill Police at 779-2101 – unless it’s an emergency. If there is fighting, pushing, or the situation escalates to become violent, call 911.
