Ever wonder what your community is doing to prepare for a local emergency? The weekend of Feb. 20-22, the American Red Cross will host two events in Morgan Hill, one for youth and one for the general public, which will enable the local community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Six Red Cross chapters, including the local Santa Clara Valley Chapter (SCVC), will run a training institute, entitled Central Coast Disaster Training Weekend, at Live Oak High School beginning Friday evening and running all day Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-22.

This training institute will offer 16 different courses and workshops designed to equip individuals to support a local response to a disaster. These courses include Disaster Mental Health, AARP Safe Driver, Serving the Diverse Community, Responding to an Aviation Disaster and Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The training institute is also an opportunity for volunteers with many different backgrounds from a wide variety of chapters to meet each other and swap stories and experiences. A Red Cross store and snacks and meals will also be available. Individuals interested in being a part of the Red Cross disaster response team can contact SCVC Disaster Services hotline at 577-2023.

FIRST AID FUN DAY

Also, the first ever American Red Cross First Aid Fun Day, sponsored by the SCVC Youth Department, the Morgan Hill Office of Emergency Services and Kaiser Foundation will take place at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center on Sunday, Feb. 22. This will be available in two sessions, the first from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and the second from 1-4:30 p.m.

First Aid Fun Day is an opportunity for youth – from seventh through 12th grade – to receive free training in First Aid and on how to take action during emergencies. Red Cross certified instructors will teach the class to dozens of learners at once.

“With unintentional injuries being the leading cause of death for young people in Santa Clara County, it is essential that we train our youth to prevent and respond to first aid injuries,” said Nicole Huguenin, director of Youth Services for the Red Cross.

After completing the course, youth will earn a Certificate in First Aid good for three years. A similar event, CPR Saturday for Youth, has been held on three occasions in the past two years, certifying over 500 youth in Adult CPR. To register for First Aid Fun Day, contact the SCVC youth department at 577-2034 or online at www.santaclaravalley.redcross.org/safe_kid/
