If temperatures in the high 90s and low 100s weren’t hot enough for area residents over the last few days, a South County scorcher of epic proportions is forecast for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.
The National Weather Service’s 7-day forecast, running through Sept. 5, has possible record-breaking heat hitting the Santa Clara Valley with temperatures peaking at 108 degrees on Sept. 1 and 109 degrees on Sept. 2.
There is little let-up of this early September swelter with Sunday through Monday highs forecast at 101 degrees and Tuesday dipping to the upper-90s.
“(Morgan Hill will reach) triple digits by Friday and then continuing warm temperatures into weekend,” said NWS meteorologist Scott Rowe earlier in the week when residents felt the burn with highs reaching 103 degrees.
NWS keeps records for the highest historical temperatures for Gilroy (not Morgan Hill) dating back to 1957. According to those stats, the record high for Aug. 28 was 106 in 1981 and for Aug. 29 is 102 in 2005.
“(Highs) fluctuate, especially where a ridge of high pressure will set up along the West Coast,” Rowe explained. “It’s not out of the ordinary being this hot this time of year.”
Morgan Hill Unified School District public schools have a scheduled three-day holiday weekend as South County will continue to sizzle through that time period.
